North Carolina has five species of tree squirrels: gray, red, fox, southern flying, and northern flying. The gray squirrel is the most common and is the state mammal since 1967.

Squirrels can cause property damage by chewing on electrical wires, digging up gardens, or nesting in attics.

  1. Gnawing and Scratching Sounds: Squirrels often make noise as they move around, especially if they are in attics or walls. Their gnawing can be heard as they chew through wood or insulation.

  2. The sound of their feet scurrying can often be heard, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon.

  3. Squirrel droppings are typically about 1/2 inch long, dark, and cylindrical. They can often be found near nesting sites or entry points.

  4. Nesting Materials: Squirrels often gather insulation, chew up cardboard , and other materials to build nests, which can be found in attics, chimneys, or even in wall cavities.

  5. Squirrels have a tendency to chew on electrical wires and insulation, which can pose a fire hazard.

  6. Entry Points: Look for holes or gaps in your roof, eaves, or walls where squirrels may have entered.
